Our coverage of this year’s Brooklyn Horror Film Festival continues with our review of The Glorious Dead. Premiering in a packed theater inside Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg for Day Two of the festival. First off we have never experienced a Adams Family film and for a first timer The Glorious Dead is a solid introduction and then you can go backwards into their resume to see why they’re so celebrated.
The genre called folk horror is completely new to us but getting introduced to it by The Glorious Dead is a good starting point. The film is about a sheriff protecting her town from various creatures who by any means make some residents disappear. Tobi Poser who plays the sheriff is a ball of every emotion chronicled in this film from tired to scared to frustrated to finally angry. There is a apocalyptic energy as the dead begins to rise and terrorize the woods but the sheriff along with her deputy continue to fight back up to the end of the film. The Adams Family unbeknownst to us keeps everything a family affair from writing to editing to casting to producing every single film they put out since 2019. With this film they captured every anxieties and issues that plaguing today’s world with incredible visuals and funny lines from some of the characters. Watching Toby and Zelda Adams (Deputy Mikey) driving around town looking for the creatures and getting confronted by the townspeople is intriguing because it could relate to any confrontation you see on social media. Here in the film they make social issues spooky and scary but find a way to resolve them.
As great as the visuals are, there was a great sense of mystery while staring into the woods and blood on the snow. The acting is great as they compliment the writing which elevate the plot. The folk concept of this film stems from the close knit community displayed on screen but also the environment that surround them with undead creatures mixed in. Even though we won’t give away the ending of the film but it seems to be on brand for the Adams. For a first timer it was quite haunted and grossed out a bit to see yet entertaining at the same time. Like it was said in the beginning of this review we need to go through the filmography and appreciate what this family do and continue to do well.
